Product Description

Sodium thiosulfate is used in swimming pools as a chlorine neutralizer to quickly lower high chlorine levels. It is also known as a chlorine reducer and works by reacting with and neutralizing both chlorine and bromine. To use it, follow the product’s specific dosage instructions, typically adding the required amount and allowing it to circulate for about 30 minutes before retesting the water.

How it works
  • Sodium thiosulfate chemically reacts with free chlorine and bromine to convert them into harmless salts and sulfur compounds.
  • This is useful after a superchlorination shock treatment or if the chlorine level becomes dangerously high.
How to use
  • Turn off all chemical feeds: Shut off the pump and any feeders before adding the chemical.
  • Test the water: Use a test kit to determine the current high chlorine level and the volume of your pool water.
  • Calculate the dose: The amount needed depends on the specific product and the target reduction. For example, one product recommends adding 2.6 oz per 10,000 gallons to lower chlorine by 1 ppm, while another suggests 5 oz per 10,000 gallons to lower chlorine by 1 ppm.
  • Add the chemical: With the pump running, add the measured amount of sodium thiosulfate to the pool. Dissolve it first if it is in a granular form, and pour it into the deepest area.
  • Circulate the water: Let the water circulate for at least 30 minutes to ensure the chemical is fully dispersed.
  • Retest the water: Test the chlorine level again before allowing people to swim. Repeat the process if necessary, but do so cautiously to avoid accidentally dropping the chlorine level too low.
